Devotion 1 of 2: Eccl 4

This chapter is a picture of how King Solomon honestly reflected on his own life. In v.1-3, he states that under an oppressive king (himself!), the people suffer tears with no comfort, so, it’s better for them not to have been born!
Solomon also made these claims about himself: Working while grasping for the wind is vanity (v.4-6); His own life was lonely and a grave misfortune (v.7-8); A monogamous marriage, which he couldn’t have because he had 1000 partners, is better (v.9-12); and a poor youth is better than an old, foolish king (himself) (v.13-16)! Let’s learn to rule wiser than Solomon!

Devotion 2 of 2: John 4

This chapter is about a Samaritan woman who encounters Jesus and is transformed from the town outcast to the town revivalist, who led her townspeople to Jesus! The fact that she fetched water from the well at noon (v.6), the hottest time of the day, shows she avoided the women of her town because she was rejected by them for her 5 divorces (v.18)!
But Jesus’ attitude toward her was that He valued her so highly that to meet her He just had to go through Samaria (v.4), which the Jews usually avoided because they disliked Samaritans! This shows how much God values each person (Is 43:4)!
