Devotion 1 of 2: Ps 79
This psalm is a prophecy of Israel scorned by its enemies (v.4) and the temple and Jerusalem destroyed (v.1). This happened 400 years later when Babylon invaded Judah and laid waste Jerusalem and Solomon’s Temple.
This prophecy also applies to the Dark Ages Church, which had compromised the Word of God and had largely become a man-controlled religion without God’s presence. Asaph’s prayers (v.5-13) show the key to lifting the church from darkness back to God’s presence is seeking His face for restoration. Let’s seek God as Asaph did!
Devotion 2 of 2: 1 Tim 3
In this chapter we find Paul’s teaching on bishops (elders, overseers, etc., v.1-7) and deacons (v.8-13). Paul often appointed elders in the churches he planted (Acts 14:23).
Some churches today follow this pattern of church governance, but many churches adopt similar practices with different titles. For example, at Shalom Church, people like bishops are called staff and people like deacons are called leaders, which many other churches around the world do, too! So, whatever we call them, let’s respect and cooperate with our leaders!
