Devotion 1 of 2: Josh 21

This chapter shows the land and cities that Israel’s tribes gave to Levi as Levi didn’t have its own land (v.1-3). Levi receiving these cities was actually a result of them turning a curse into a blessing through faith and obedience!
The curse of being divided in Jacob and scattered in Israel (Gen 49:7) came as a result of their ancestor, Levi, deceiving and killing the people of Shechem for violating his sister Dinah (Gen 34)! However, Levi turned this into a blessing by obeying God and executing the people who worshiped the golden calf at Mt. Sinai.
God chose Levi to become priests, who would not receive their own land from God but from the other tribes scattered across Canaan. Let us, too, change curses into blessings through faith and obedience!

Devotion 2 of 2: Josh 22

After conquering Canaan, the 2.5 tribes from the east of Jordan returned home (v.9). Right away they built a huge altar (v.10). When the western tribes saw that, they prepared for war and sent a delegation for talks (v.11-14). At the talks, the 2.5 tribes explained their reason for the altar – to remind them to be faithful to God (v.26-29)!
So, war was averted! But misunderstanding could have been avoided if the eastern tribes had communicated their reason for building the altar from the beginning! Let’s have open communication AMAP in our church, home, workplace and all relationships!
