Devotion 1 of 2: Deut 27
After entering Canaan, Moses told the tribes to divide into two groups with one group blessing the people for obeying God and the other group cursing for disobeying. Then Moses named the tribes in each group in v.12-13.
But why were the tribes who cursed chosen for that? I think predestination and free will were working here. First, predestination, they were not descendants of Jacob’s wives, but their wives’ maids, which was not by their choice. 2nd, free will, but in Reuben’s case, he chose to violate his father’s bed. In this world, both predestination and free will are working.

カナンに入った後、モーセは部族を二つのグループに分け、一方のグループは神に従う場合、民を祝福し、もう一方のグループは神に従わない場合、民を呪うように命じた。そして12-13節で、それぞれのグループに属する部族の名前を挙げている。
しかし、なぜ呪いを宣言する部族が選ばれたのだろうか。私は、ここでは摂理と自由意志の両方が働いていると考える。まず摂理だが、ヤコブの妻たちの子孫ではなく、その女奴隷たちの子孫であったが、それは彼ら自身の選択ではなかった。次に自由意志だが、ルベンの場合は、自ら父の寝床を汚すことを選んだ。この世界では、摂理と自由意志の両方が働いているのを理解しましょう。
Devotion 2 of 2: Deut 28
Moses repeats the calling that God had given Israel, which also applies spiritually to the church. In v.1b-2, he says, “…the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God.”
Then Moses points out the blessings the people would receive if they obeyed in v.3-14, and then the curses they would receive if they disobeyed in v.15-68! Let’s obey God and fulfill our calling to lead our nation!
