Devotion 1 of 2: 1 Kings 15
In this chapter we see the reigns of Abijam and Asa of southern Judah and Jeroboam, Nadab and Baasha of northern Israel. Asa was the only half-good king in this group because he was like David and did what was right in the eyes of the Lord (v.11).
However, when he was losing in his war against Baasha of northern Israel, he gave all the silver and gold in the treasuries of the king’s house to Ben-Hadad, king of Syria, and asked for help (v.18). This seemed to work as Baasha withdrew from Judah (v.19-21). But in 2 Chron 16:7-10, a seer prophesied judgment, so it wasn’t good!
Another minus in Asa’s life was his feet got diseased in his old age (v.23). Once more, we find more information about this in 2 Chron 16:12. It says Asa did not seek the Lord but the physicians only! Let’s seek God and doctors!
Devotion 2 of 2: 1 Kings 16
This chapter continues the depressing record of Israel’s wicked kings, from Baasha, to Elah, to Zimri, to Omri and finally to Ahab, who is regarded as the worst of Israel’s kings!
The very short reign of Zimri for only 7 days was unusual. The reason was because he assassinated King Elah and made himself king (v.9-10). During that time, Israel’s army was fighting a war against the Philistines (v.15). So, when they heard what Zimri did, they didn’t accept it and right away made their commander, Omri, king instead (v.16)!
Omri’s army then left the battlefield and right away attacked Zimri’s city and house. When Zimri saw he had no chance to withstand Israel’s army, he set his house on fire and died in the fire (v.17-19).
When we try to make ourselves kings, we will fail. Kings should be made by their followers.
