Devotion 1 of 2: 2 Sam 5

This chapter is about David being made king over Israel (v.3) and also about him conquering Zion and making it the City of David (v.6-9). A little later on, Zion is where the Tabernacle of David was set up.
The inhabitants of Zion, the Jebusites were supremely confident that David could not defeat them. That’s why they said to David, “You shall not come in here; but the blind and the lame will repel you,” thinking, “David cannot come in here” (v.6). So, in wartime, Zion was a strategic stronghold in Jerusalem, hard for the enemy to penetrate.
Since it was first mentioned in the Bible in v.7, Zion has become very important in Israel’s history and culture because it became the City of David. Zion now stands for many things: Jerusalem, Israel, the Jews’ movement back to their homeland, God’s dwelling place, center of Christ’s reign on earth, the revival church, etc.
Let’s learn the significance of what Zion symbolizes in the Bible.

Devotion 2 of 2: 2 Sam 6

This chapter describes the final stages of David recovering the Ark of the Covenant. The Ark was stolen by the Philistines under Eli, then returned part-way under Samuel, but was left unused under Saul, until finally it was fully restored under David!
This is a prophetic picture of the church losing the presence of God during the Medieval Age, recovering God’s presence part-way through the Reformation and various Protestant revivals, but not fully understanding it during the denominational building era, and finally fully restoring it through the LDR!
David returned the Ark with praise (v.5). God has restored praise & worship to further restore His presence to the church. But Israel made the mistake of putting it on a new cart (v.3), which was copying the Philistines’ method! The oxen stumbled, causing Uzzah to touch the Ark to stop it from falling (v.6-7). The Lord struck him dead (v.7).
The lesson is that if the church copies the world’s methods to try to restore God’s presence, it will die! Let’s sincerely follow only the Holy Spirit into God’s genuine presence!
