Devotion 1 of 2: 2 Sam 1
This chapter explains how King Saul died. 1 Sam 31 has a different version. Critics say this contradictory; therefore the Bible is not God’s Word. But let’s examine the 2 versions and see how they don’t contradict but fit together.
In 2 Sam 31, when Saul saw that Israel had lost the war, and the Philistines were going to kill him, he told his armorbearer to thrust his sword through him. But his armorbearer couldn’t do it, so Saul fell on his own sword (v.4). Then the armorbearer committed suicide also (v.5).
But in 2 Sam 1, Saul was still alive! And when an Amalekite passed by, Saul asked him to finish the job (v.9)! So, the Amalekite killed Saul (v.10)! This is the full picture of Saul’s death.
Amalekites symbolize the flesh. One reason is because they were the 1st nation to attack Israel after they were saved from Egypt (Ex 17). Remember, Saul spared the king of the Amalekites (1 Sam 15), but the Amalekite didn’t spare Saul! If we spare our flesh, it won’t spare us!
Devotion 2 of 2: 2 Sam 2
This chapter tells us the story of Israel’s forgotten king. He was Ishbosheth, King Saul’s son, who was made king after his father died. We always refer to Saul as Israel’s 1st, and David as Israel’s 2nd king. We never mention Ishbosheth. I think there may be at least 2 reasons for that.
The 1st is because he was not chosen by God and anointed by a priest to become king. And the 2nd is because it seemed like Abner, the commander of Saul’s army, out of his own will took Ishbosheth and made him king (v.8).
The result was that it seems that Ishbosheth was never accepted by the people. He only managed to rule for 2 short years (v.10) (which may have actually been 7.5 years, same as David-v.11), and then he was killed (2 Sam 5). The lesson from Ishbosheth is that we can only be made into a spiritual ruler by God, not by man.
