Devotion 1 of 2: Deut 1
“Deuteronomy” means “Second Law.” It means this book repeats and explains the law that God gave to Israel at Mt. Sinai at the beginning of their journey through the wilderness. The contents of this book was spoken by Moses in a series of farewell speeches at the end of Israel’s wilderness journey.
It was only an 11-day journey from Horeb (Mt. Sinai) to Kadesh Barnea, where the spies were sent into Canaan (v.2). So Israel could’ve entered the land on the 12th day, but their unbelief made it a 40-year journey of death! Let’s not repeat Israel’s mistake!

Devotion 2 of 2: Deut 2
Chapters 2 and 3 describe the final places Israel crossed during their wilderness journey before landing at Pisgah (3:27), which is also called Mt. Nebo, just before Canaan.
God told Israel to avoid war with Esau (Edom), Moab and Ammon because God had given them their land (2:4-19). By contrast, God told them to take King Sihon’s land because they didn’t allow Israel to pass through their area (v.24-36). Lesson: We need to learn which enemies we should fight against and which to avoid fighting.
