Devotion 1 of 2: Num 17

This chapter is about Aaron’s rod that put forth buds, blossoms and almonds (v.8), showing God had chosen him to be high priest (v.5) and not Korah, Dathan or Abiram (16:1). False prophets are known by their fruit (Matt 7:16), and so are God’s leaders. In Paul’s case, the Corinthian church was the sign of his apostleship (1 Cor 9:2).
Aaron’s rod was later placed in the Ark of the Covenant (v.10) with the 10 Commandments and the pot of manna. Consecutively, they represent God’s Choice, Law and Provision, the foundation of Israel’s identity.

Devotion 2 of 2: Num 18

V.1-7 explain the duties of the priests and Levites. The priests were only Aaron and his descendants. They fulfilled the “spiritual” work of the tabernacle (v.5), while the Levites were assigned to help the priests with the “natural” part of the work of the tabernacle (v.2-3). Levites crossing over into the priests’ work could meet death!
Because the priests and Levites couldn’t work their fields as much as the rest of Israel, they could receive the meat of the heave offerings as well as parts of various offerings of Israel (v.8-13). God takes care of His own!
