Devotion 1 of 2: Gen 29
This chapter describes Jacob arriving at his uncle Laban’s place and marrying Laban’s 2 daughters, Leah and Rachel. Jacob falls in love with Rachel and works for 7 years for Laban to marry her, but is deceived by Laban into marrying Leah instead (v.18-30). Thus, Jacob experiences the pain of being lied to and deceived.
This bitter experience begins to transform Jacob’s personality from a deceiver and supplanter (one who grasps the heel) into a person with humility, compassion and respect. Let’s also grow into a better person!

この章では、ヤコブが叔父ラバンの家を訪れ、ラバンの二人の娘、レアとラケルと結婚する様子が描かれています。ヤコブはラケルに恋をし、7年間ラケルと結婚するように、ラバンのために働きますが、ラバンに騙されてレアと結婚させられてしまいます（18-30節）。こうしてヤコブは、嘘をつかれ、騙されるという苦しみを味わうことになります。
この苦い経験を通して、ヤコブは欺瞞者、奪い取る者（かかとを掴む者）から、謙虚で思いやりがあり、敬意を払う者へと変わっていきます。私たちも、より良い人間へと成長していきましょう。

Devotion 2 of 2: Gen 30
This chapter describes how Rachel finally gives birth to a son. She had 3 rivals, Leah, her maid Bilhah, and Rachel’s own maid Zilpah. They gave birth to 10 sons as Leah and Rachel vied for Jacob’s attention, even offering their maids to him (29:28-30:20). Finally, because she didn’t give up, Rachel conceived and birthed a son (v.23)!
Spiritual application: The church, especially in countries like Japan, is the barren woman of the Bible. How she breaks the curse of barrenness and has a son shows how the church can also have spiritual children.

この章では、ラケルがついに男の子を産む様子が描かれています。彼女には3人のライバルがいました。レア、その侍女ビルハ、そしてラケルの侍女ジルパです。レアとラケルはヤコブの気を引こうと競い合い、侍女たちを差し出すことさえありました（29:28-30:20）。そしてついに、諦めなかった理由のために、ラケルは身ごもり、男の子を産みました（23節）。
