Devotion 1 of 2: Hos 13
This chapter describes the judgments Israel received for her sins. V.16b says because Israel rebelled against God, “They shall fall by the sword, their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child ripped open.”
Israel’s infants were dashed and women ripped open when Assyria invaded in 722 BC. Assyria was cruel in warfare, sometimes cutting off their enemies’ hands, feet, ears or noses, gouging out eyes, bashing children to death, and cutting pregnant women open. Nahum 3:10 says Assyria also dashed Egypt’s children to pieces.
Ps 137:8-9 indicates that Babylon also dashed Judah’s children against rocks. But Is 13:16 prophesies that Babylon’s infants would also be dashed to pieces! This cruelty seemed to have been common in OT times.
God didn’t condone killing children. It was Satan causing man to do those heinous acts. Even today around the world terrible atrocities are being committed by evil men. Let’s work for world revival to defeat Satan’s rule!
Devotion 2 of 2: John 13
Jesus said of Judas in v.21, “…one of you is going to betray Me.” Then He said of Peter in v.38b, “…before the rooster crows, you will disown me 3 times!” In one sense, what these 2 did outwardly did not seem that different—they both betrayed Jesus!
And after their betrayals, once again, their outward reactions did not seem so different. Judas felt remorse, confessed his sin to the priests and returned their money (Matt 27:3-4). Meanwhile, Peter denied Jesus 3 times, then remembered Jesus’ words, felt remorse and wept bitterly (Matt 27:74-75).
But inwardly, the 2 men were completely different. Satan had entered Judas (v.26-27), so although he felt remorse, there was no hope of redemption, so he hanged himself (Matt 27:5). But Peter was a sincere disciple who failed, but he understood repentance and forgiveness, so he repented and was restored to the Lord!
