Devotion 1 of 2: Ezek 20
In v.1, elders of Israel came to Ezekiel to inquire of the Lord, but God refused their request (v.3), and instead told Ezekiel to tell them their abominations (v.4). Thus, this chapter describes the history of Israel’s sins of idolatry, harlotry, sacrificing of children, etc., and the history God’s judgment and also mercies (v.5-32).
Toward the end of this chapter, God says He will gather Israel from the countries where they had been scattered (v.40-41). Then they will loathe themselves because of the past evils and will come to know God (v.42-44). This prophecy can only be fulfilled when Israel accepts Jesus as their Messiah at the end of this world age.
Let’s pray for this promise of God for Israel’s full restoration to be fulfilled!
Devotion 2 of 2: Matt 20
Let’s apply this chapter to the last days. In v.1-16, we find the famous story of the workers in the vineyard all paid the same amount despite working different lengths of time. But one reason it’s reasonable for the last workers to receive the same as the earlier workers is because they will be martyred by beheading (Rev 20:4)!
In v.20-28, the disciples argue about who will be greatest in the kingdom (Luke 9:44-46) right after Jesus told them He would be crucified in v.17-19! This shows their immaturity; they needed to learn to be humble servants before they could become great vessels in the kingdom (v.26-28).
In v.29-34, 2 blind men are healed. They are a picture of the spiritually blind disciples arguing who is the greatest, as opposed to spiritually seeing Jesus, who was willing to die to serve humanity! Let’s be like Jesus!
