Devotion 1 of 2: 1 Kings 19
In v.1-2, Queen Jezebel gets angry at Elijah for killing the prophets of Baal and threatens to kill him! This frightens Elijah, and he runs for his life to the wilderness, where he gets depressed and wishes to die (v.3-4)! This is a warning that the Elijah Church of the endtime will also face times of discouragement!
How can we overcome? In v.11-21, God shows Elijah 2 important principles. The 1st is that God is not necessarily in the big, powerful, and dramatic events, but in the still small voice of intimate, personal relationship! This is what will sustain us through discouragements, not the big events!
The 2nd is that Elijah needed to train up a disciple, Elisha. We should not only invest in our ministry, but in helping others to grow and be used by God! We become fulfilled when we give to others!
Devotion 2 of 2: 1 Kings 20
Let’s look at 2 lessons from this chapter. Lesson 1: Source and quality of advice (information) are all important! King Ben-Hadad of Syria was much more powerful than northern Israel’s King Ahab. He attacked but Ahab followed his elders’ and a prophet’s excellent advice, and Israel won (v.1-21)!
For the next battle, Ben-Hadad’s servants gave superstitious advice, and he listened (v.23-27). However, Ahab’s prophets gave him accurate advice, and when he followed their directions, once more Israel miraculously defeated a much stronger Syrian army (v.28-30)!
Let’s now look at lesson 2: Show no mercy in war! Ahab made a fatal mistake after defeating Ben-Hadad by sparing his life (v.31-34). A prophet rebuked Ahab for this disastrous error, which would cost him his life and his nation (v.35-43)! This principle applies only to our spiritual warfare against wickedness—we should show no mercy!
