Devotion 1 of 2: Jer 49
This chapter contains prophecies of judgment upon several Gentile nations: Ammon, Edom, Damascus (Aram), Kedar and Hazor, and Elam. Let’s just look at one of them: Ammon.
Ammon lived in the NW part of the modern country of Jordan. This is why Jordan’s capital is called Amman. Ammon’s main god was Milcom, and their land was next to the tribe of Gad, who lived east of the Jordan River.
V.1b asks, “Why then does Milcom (Ammon) inherit Gad, and his people dwell in its cities?” The answer is that when Assyria conquered northern Israel in 721 BC, Ammon avoided invasion by submitting and paying tribute to Assyria. It was probably at this time that Ammon joined with Assyria and took over Gad!
But Milcom (Ammon) went into captivity (v.3b) by Babylon in 582 BC but returned (v.6). They survived until finally dispersed in 63 BC by Rome.
Devotion 2 of 2: 1 Pet 5
V.5-7 emphasize submitting and being humble: “submit to elders, be submissive to one another;” “be clothed with humility, God gives grace to the humble, humble yourselves.” Then v.8 says that our adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour!
What we should learn from this is that to defeat the devil, we need to first be submissive and humble because if we’re not, the devil will easily deceive and devour us!
We cannot defeat the devil by our strength; we need God’s help. But God will resist us if we’re proud and only give us grace if we’re humble (v.5)! So let’s be humble, then, in due time, God will exalt us (v.6)!
