Devotion 1 of 2: Jer 42

The Jews asked Jeremiah to tell them what God wanted, and they would do it, even if it was displeasing (v.1-3, 5-6)! 10 days later, God answered and said to stay in the land (not go to Egypt) and not be afraid of Babylon for God would protect them (even if taken captive to Babylon) and cause them to return to their land (v.7-12).
In the end, God spoke severely that the people were hypocrites because they said they would obey Him, but they did not (and went to Egypt) (v.19-21). God then pronounced their judgment: they would die in Egypt (v.22).
Endtime application: Many believers say they only worship God. But they fear AC, so they try to avoid him by the pretrib rapture teaching, like the Jews escaping to Egypt. But the result is death, spiritually falling away and worshiping AC to survive. Let’s not fear AC but accept him as God’s servant to make the church hot or cold!

Devotion 2 of 2: Rom 14

I want to look at the topic of the right day of worship. V.5-6a says, “One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord; and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it.”
Some Christians, like 7th Day Adventists and Messianic Jews, believe that worship should be done on the Sabbath (Saturday), because God ordained that day as the day of rest (Ex 20:8).
But the NT doesn’t teach there is a special day to worship God! Scriptures like v.5-6 show Jesus has freed us from esteeming some days, like the Sabbath, as special. Other Scriptures are:
1) Col 2:16-17 Let no one judge you about the Sabbath. (Jewish Christians were judging Gentile Christians for not worshiping on the Sabbath!)
2) Acts 20:7 Paul met with believers at Troas on Sunday to teach and break bread, showing the Gentile church was beginning to meet on Sundays.
3) 1 Cor 16:2 Paul instructed the Corinth Church (Gentile church) to store up their offerings on Sundays and not do it when he came.
So, the 1st church began worshiping on Saturdays, but as Gentiles got saved, Sunday worship also began. This was to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection and the birth of the church on Pentecost, which both occurred on Sunday.
Sabbath worship continued in parallel, until 135 AD, when the 2nd Jewish Revolt was crushed by Rome, and many laws were made against the Jews to prevent another revolt, including prohibiting Sabbath worship. The church distanced themselves from the Jews to avoid persecution, and more and more Sunday worship became the norm.
In 321 AD, Constantine made Sunday a day of rest in the Roman Empire. This made it easier for Christians to attend worship services. And in 365 AD, the Catholic Church’s Council of Laodicea decreed that Sunday should be the day of worship instead of Saturday. This caused Saturday worship to all but cease in the Empire.
