Devotion 1 of 2: Jer 41
This chapter reveals the evil of Ishmael, a deceitful and lawless leader. He visited Gedaliah, the governor of Judah, who had been warned about Ishmael in 40:13-16, but who ignored it. While they were eating together, Ishmael assassinated Gedaliah (v.1-3). Eating together was a sign of trust, so what Ishmael did was despicable.
2 days later, 80 men came from 3 cities to worship God. Ishmael deceived them with tears and led them to the middle of the city, where they were killed (v.4-7). But 10 of the men said they had treasures of produce to give, so their lives were spared (v.8). This is an example of a corrupt leader being bought by money.
Gedaliah was warned about Ishmael, but he didn’t discern and was killed as a result. There are deceitful, lawless and vicious political leaders in the world today. We should not dismiss warnings about their danger, or we will suffer the same fate as Gedaliah. Let’s ask God to help us to discern good and evil!
Devotion 2 of 2: Rom 13
V.1-7 teach about our attitude toward the government, and v.8-14 instruct about our attitude toward one another. About governments, Paul’s basic teaching is to be subject to authorities (v.1). About our relationships, Paul teaches love fulfills the law (v.8, 10).
Concerning obeying governments, one difficult problem is when the government does something we don’t agree with or we cannot accept. The Jews had this problem with the high taxes Rome required them to pay. But Paul, like Jesus, taught we should pay taxes (v.7). And Paul was saying that to the Christians in Rome!
But when the authority does something that is against God’s command, we must obey God. When the authorities told the apostles in Acts 5:28, “Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name?” they replied in 5:29, “We ought to obey God rather than men.” Let’s remember these words in our dealings with the authorities.
