Devotion 1 of 2: 2 Sam 23
David’s mighty men are described in v.8-39. 36 men are listed here, although v.39 says there are 37 in all. This discrepancy is solved this way. There are 2 groups of 3: Josheb-Basshebeth, Eleazar, and Shammah (v.1-12), and Abishai, Benaiah and a third man who is unlisted (v.18-23). This makes 6 men. Then in v.24-39, we find 31 names listed. So, by adding 6 and 31, we come up with 37. But, one of them is missing!
Some of their exploits are truly super-human, like Josheb-Basshebeth, chief of the captains, who killed 800 men at one time (v.8)! Another, Abishai was chief of the next 3 mighty men. He used his spear and killed 300 (v.18)!
One interesting anomaly about this group is that at least 3 of them seem to be Gentiles. They are Igal the son of Nathan of Zobah (v.36), Zelek the Ammonite (v.37) and Uriah the Hittite (v.39). About the others, we don’t have enough information on them to identify their nationalities. It’s encouraging to know that David’s mighty men included Gentiles!

彼らの功績の中には、一度に800人を殺したかしらショブアム（8節）のように、まさに超人的なものもあります！また、アビシャイは次の3人の勇士のかしらでした。彼は槍をふるって300人を殺しました（18節）。
このグループに関する興味深い例外は、少なくとも 3 人が異邦人であると思われることです。彼らはツォバのナタンの子イグアル(36節)、アンモン人ツェレク(37節)、ヘテ人ウリヤ(39節)です。他の者については、国籍を特定できるほど十分な情報がありません。ダビデの勇士の中に異邦人が含まれていたことは勇気づけられます。
Devotion 2 of 2: 2 Sam 24
Toward the end of his life, David makes another tragic mistake by numbering the people, which resulted in 70,000 lives lost (v.1-15)! Joab and the captains of the army voiced their opposition to David’s plan, but he did not listen to his closest advisers and paid a dear price for this failure!
We need political leaders who are bold in vision and leadership, but who also are humble and wise enough to listen to the advice of their staff and their citizens. When leaders make mistakes, the country will suffer! Because some leaders made poor decisions about the Covid-19 pandemic, many hundreds of thousands of people died—much more than if they had listened to the advice of medical experts.
Let’s pray for our leaders to have the humility to recognize their mistakes and to listen to their citizens’ criticisms so they can change their bad policies.

ダビデは人生の終わりに近づいた時、民を数えるという悲劇的な過ちを犯し、その結果7万人の命が失われました（1-15節）。ヨアブと将校たちはダビデの計画に反対を表明しましたが、ダビデは側近の意見に耳を傾けず、この失敗の代償を払いました。
私たちには、大胆なビジョンとリーダーシップを持ちながらも、スタッフや国民の意見に耳を傾けるほど謙虚で賢明な政治指導者が必要です。指導者が過ちを犯すと、国は苦しむことになります。一部の指導者が新型コロナウイルス感染症のパンデミックについて誤った判断をしたために、彼らの国で何十万人もの人々が亡くなりました。医療専門家のアドバイスに耳を傾けていた場合よりもはるかに多くの死者を出しました。
私たちの指導者が謙虚に過ちを認め、国民の批判に耳を傾け、悪い政策を変えられるよう祈りましょう。
