Devotion 1 of 2: Ps 131

I believe this psalm is teaching the need for humility. David speaks of great matters and profound things as something that he should avoid because they would lead to haughtiness and loftiness (pride) (v.1). Instead, he decided to quiet his soul and become like a weaned child depending on his mother (v.2).
I think there are times when we must follow the advice of this psalm. In David’s life, it would be times like when Samuel came to his house to find and anoint the next king of Israel, but he wasn’t called in from work to participate (1 Sam 16:1-13)! But rather than get upset, it was better that he did what he did…became a child, didn’t get concerned with great matters and just obeyed his father.
Or, another occasion might have been when the women were shouting, “Saul has killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands!” when Saul’s army returned from battle (1 Sam 18:7). And another time could have been when Saul entered the cave where David was hiding from him, and one of his men told David that now was the ideal time to kill Saul (1 Sam 24)!
Yes, at times it’s important to not get haughty and think ahead of yourself with lofty plans of becoming great, but rather, to become innocent as a child and shut down those prideful thoughts.
But I also believe that at other times, we shouldn’t follow this psalm, but should follow what Jesus said about John the Baptist in Matt 11:12, “From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.”
Jesus was saying to take the kingdom of heaven, you must become violent and take it by force! In other words, there will be a battle, and you must be brave and fight for it, or the kingdom will not come! This was the spirit that David showed when he saw Goliath. His attitude was not of fear, like Israel’s soldiers (1 Sam 17:24), but defiant as he declared, “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” (1 Sam 17:26b).
I believe we need this kind of attitude, rather than Ps 131, to become the LDC and bring revival to Japan!

Devotion 2 of 2: Mark 12

THU, 1/30B (3/4)
MARK 12: Free sharing!
During Jesus’ day, Judea was a colony of the Roman Empire, and the Jews had to pay high taxes to Rome. Because of this, the Jews were angry, and conflicts sometimes arose against Rome. Knowing this, in v.13-17, the Pharisees and Herodians tried to trap Jesus by asking whether they should pay taxes to Caesar or not.
If Jesus answered, “Yes,” the people would get upset at Him. But if He answered, “No,” the soldiers could arrest Him as a rebel! It seemed as if there was no way out! In the future, we may also be put on trial by AC and be asked difficult questions. Let’s study how Jesus handled this situation to prepare ourselves to face persecution.
Jesus asked for a denarius and said, “Whose image is this?” They replied, “Caesar’s.” Then Jesus gave them an awesome answer, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s!” The meaning? Pay taxes to Caesar because we live in his empire and must follow the laws of that empire.
But we are created in God’s image, so we should give ourselves to God! If we do, we will live above and not be controlled by worldly things, like taxes, so we’ll be able to endure them, even if they are high. But if we don’t give ourselves to God, we will be controlled by this world, therefore we’ll be angry at the high taxes and may revolt one day. Lesson…Let’s give ourselves to God!
