Devotion 1 of 2: 1 Sam 19

This chapter describes how much Saul wanted to kill David despite resistance from Jonathan and Michal, his children, and the prophet Samuel. However, somehow, David always managed to escape (v.1-17).
Application: Throughout church history, when a new revival started, the old church almost always opposes it! After the Reformation began, Catholics persecuted and killed Protestants, and the Protestants fought back and killed Catholics, too. Let’s stand firmly on what God speaks to us, like David did, but let’s do it without anger!
In v.18-24, there is an episode about prophecy. Let’s see what we can learn about this gift. V.20 says Saul’s men tried 3 times to capture David at Naioth. But when they approached a group of prophesying prophets, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they also prophesied! On the 4th try, Saul himself went to capture David, but he too began to prophesy, all the way to Naioth! Not only that, but upon reaching Naioth, Saul even stripped off his clothes, and prophesied while lying naked all day and night (v.20-24)!
Appl: This story shows that even if a person is not a prophet, he can prophesy just by approaching the anointing of prophecy or the presence of God! I have been in meetings where the anointing of prophecy was so strong, it seemed like anyone could prophesy—I think about 20 did in one meeting!
Appl: Another point is Saul stripped off his clothes and prophesied. But “Naked” in Hebrew can mean to take off one’s outer garments and be dressed in underwear. So, God made Saul take off his royal garments (of pride) and humbled him while he was prophesying.

Devotion 2 of 2: 1 Sam 20

This chapter shows the strong bond between David and Jonathan. At the beginning of this chapter, Jonathan thinks his father wouldn’t harm David (v.1-3). But when Saul gets angry and tries to kill him, Jonathan realizes his father’s true feelings, that he wants to kill David (v.4-34). So, in the end, Jonathan tragically parts with David (v.35-42). This will lead to his eventual death alongside Saul in 1 Sam 31.
Jonathan is a type of the sincere believer who loves the LDR (David) but has strong ties to his/her denominational church and decides not to leave it to join the LDR. As a result, this believer may not be able to overcome AC and therefore may compromise his/her faith, take AC’s mark and worship his image.
Let’s pray for and witness to all Christians to fully join the LDR, even if it means they may be expelled from their denominational church, because it will give them a much better chance to overcome AC and not take part in the great falling away.
