Devotion 1 of 2: 1 Sam 11
This chapter shares the story of Jabesh Gilead being threatened by Nahash the Ammonite, and how Saul gathers Israel together to defeat Ammon and rescue Jabesh Gilead (v.1-11). One key factor in this victory was v.6, “Then the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard this news, and his anger was greatly aroused.”
Also, Saul’s character is manifested when some people wanted to kill those who had criticized him for being chosen king. Saul refused to spoil that day’s joy by taking out vengeance on his critics! In this instance, he placed the well being of the people above his own feelings, producing great rejoicing among the people (v.12-15)!
Application: Saul is symbolic of denominations and organizations, which can do wonderful things to help people in need! The key is being led and empowered by the Holy Spirit! Another important factor is to be Christ-like in character. When we are motivated by love and not self or pride, we will bring joy and blessing to others.

Devotion 2 of 2: 1 Sam 12
1) His own leadership: He led Israel with integrity, not by oppressing them (v.1-5).
2) God’s deliverances: He delivered Israel from Egypt through Moses and from their enemies in Canaan through judges (v.6-11).
3) Samuel’s warning to Israel: Their asking for a king was rebellion against God. But if they served the Lord, He would not forsake them. However, if they didn’t, they and their king would be swept away (v.12-25).
God is patient toward Israel in allowing them to have what they wanted: a king. But He also holds them accountable by warning them that if they don’t serve Him, they would be destroyed!
Let’s be thankful for God’s mercy, but let’s also understand He will hold us accountable for our actions!
