Devotion 1 of 2: 1 Sam 9
In this chapter, God chooses Saul, son of Kish, as the 1st king of Israel (v.17). Saul was a choice man, taller and more handsome than any other man in Israel (v.1-2).
Application: Saul represents man-centered organizations or denominations, which were established after revivals in order to preserve as many of the people who got converted as possible. At the beginning, denominations are sincere in their motives to do the right thing for the kingdom of God. They build beautiful houses of worship, schools, hospitals, seminaries, orphanages, etc., and do many good works to serve their communities. It is only later than problems begin to show up in Saul.
Let’s learn to appreciate the many good things that Christian organizations and denominations have done for the world and thank God for them.

Devotion 2 of 2: 1 Sam 10
In this chapter, Samuel anoints Saul to be king in v.1. Saul meets prophets who are prophesying; the Spirit comes upon him, and he prophesies, too, and is turned into another man (v.5-6).
Samuel gathers Israel to Mizpah and chooses Saul, the son of Kish, but cannot find him because he is hiding among the equipment! So, they drag him out and Samuel announces that the Lord has chosen Saul to be king (v.17-24)! Saul is very humble and a seemingly good choice, but later on problems will arise.
Application: In all revivals, the Holy Spirit is working powerfully, so at the start of the denomination that rises out of the revival, the Spirit is still active, and powerful gifts of the Spirit are in operation. And at the beginning the organization is very small, so the leaders and the people are very humble and gracious, and full of love.
But as the denomination grows, they can become organization-centered instead of Christ-centered. This is what happened to the early church. They saw many wonderful miracles by the Holy Spirit, but as they grew, they gradually drifted away from their first love, as Jesus said of the Ephesus Church in Rev 2:4, “I have this against you, that you have left your first love.”
Let’s always seek to keep our first love for Jesus in our hearts and never change from being Christ-centered!
