Devotion 1 of 2: 1 Sam 5
This chapter tells what happened to the Philistines when they captured Israel’s Ark of the Covenant and took it to their own cities: Ashdod, Gath and Ekron!
At Ashdod, the Ark was placed in the house of their god, Dagon, and the next day, Dagon had fallen on its knees before the Ark! The day after, Dagon had fallen on its face, and its head and both hands were broken off! Beside that, the people of Ashdod were ravaged by tumors (v.2-6).
So, Ashdod decided to give the Ark to Gath, but Gath was struck with tumors, too (v.8-9). So, Gath gave the Ark to Ekron, who didn’t want it, but when it came, many died and those who didn’t were stricken with tumors (v.10-12)!
Application: The Ark represents the presence of God. To Israel, it brought blessings, but to the enemy, it brought destruction to their idols, an epidemic of tumors to the people, and death to many! In the LD, the 2 witnesses of Rev 11, who actually are the LDC, will have the presence of God and the authority to bring judgment, plagues and death upon their enemies who try to harm them (Rev 11:5-6).
Let’s seek full maturity in Christ and God’s presence in our lives so that God can entrust us with such awesome spiritual authority, which will help to convince multitudes that Jesus is the real God and they should accept Him!
The Philistines should have realized their gods were not real and the God of Israel was! They should have repented of idolatry and accepted Jehovah! But it’s not easy to let go of religious traditions and accept another nation’s God!
Let’s pray for love to be able to wisely lead Japanese people to Christ during Japan’s revival! Let’s learn how to talk to Japanese people without offending them or causing them to close their hearts! Let’s speak with sincerity and humility to help them let go of their religious traditions and idolatrous customs and step into a new world of Christian truth, which will be so different from what they’re used to! O God, give us wisdom, we pray!
Devotion 2 of 2: 1 Sam 6
This chapter describes how the Philistines returned the Ark to Israel. They did it with their superstitious religious rituals and images, like making trespass offerings of 5 golden tumors and rats for Israel and sending them to Israel with the Ark (v.1-12).
The first Israeli city that received the Ark was Beth Shemesh. They rejoiced but made the mistake of looking into the Ark, which caused 50,070 to die (v.13-19)! So, they decided to send the Ark to Kirjath Jearim (v.20-21).
Application 1: Concerning Philistines returning Ark with their offerings: Sometimes Christian events begin with pagan roots, like Christmas, Easter, etc. I believe if the pagan influence is still there, we should avoid practicing the event. But if the pagan influence is no longer there, and if the event has been “redeemed” and can be used for good, then it’s all right to accept it.
I believe examples of redeemed events are: Christmas, Easter, Hawaiian hula dance, Olympics, etc. Also, visiting family graves is good in order to clean the grave, place flowers, show respect, thank God for the deceased, and pray for blessings on the living but not to worship or pray to the dead.
For Buddhist funerals, we should attend for family and friends, but offer flowers instead of incense. If possible, explain to the family beforehand and receive permission to give flowers. I believe it’s okay to visit temples and shrines, but not to bow down or worship or pray there, unless we pray for God to save the people who go there.
For memorial services for the deceased, it’s good to attend for family and friends, but should try to receive permission to offer flowers to show respect because you are a Christian, instead of incense.
I believe some examples of religious practices that still have idol or pagan influence and therefore should be avoided are: Burning incense, Praying to or worshiping the dead, Bowing or praying to idols, Visiting shrines on New Year’s Day, Dancing at Bon-Odori Dances, Celebrating Halloween, etc.
Application 2: The people of Beth Shemesh opened the Ark and over 50K were killed because they didn’t understand the Ark and the presence of God! This is a warning to us to learn and grow to full maturity so we will understand God’s presence and authority to be able to participate in the LDR and use authority the right way! Not using authority correctly can hurt, not only other people, but ourselves as well!
