Devotion 1 of 2: Ps 118

V.22-23 are famous verses: “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This was the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.” What’s the meaning of these verses?
“The stone,” or, sometimes, “the rock,” is Jesus.
“Which the builders rejected” means the Jews and their religious leaders didn’t accept Him as the Messiah. Rom 9:33 says it like this: “Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense...” Jesus was a stumbling stone to the Jews because He didn’t fit into their image of a Messiah who would deliver them from Rome and set up a physical kingdom of Israel again.
“Has become the chief cornerstone” means Jesus became the cornerstone, or foundation, or rock of a new, spiritual Kingdom of God (the church) for the whole world, not only Jews, through the cross and the teaching of grace, not the law.
Eph 2:20 confirms Jesus’ role as a cornerstone, saying, the church is the household of God, “…having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone…”
Also, in Matt 16:13-19, when Peter confessed Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, Jesus made clear His position in the church by stating, “On this rock (=Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God), I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it!” So He’s the cornerstone and also the foundational rock of the church!
Lastly, what is the meaning of “This was the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes?” It means God took the Jews’ rejection of Jesus and turned it into a marvelous blessing! God built a completely new spiritual Kingdom, not only for Jews, but for the whole world! Awesome! And He made His Son the cornerstone and foundation of that new Kingdom!
Isn’t our God fabulous? Nothing can stop Him from fulfilling His plan for humanity in the best way possible!

Devotion 2 of 2: Rev 16

This chapter describes the 7 bowls of plagues or judgments upon mankind for their sins, especially for shedding the blood of the saints (v.6).
One interesting feature of these plagues is that some of them correspond, but in greater intensity, with the 7 trumpet judgments in Rev 8-9, 11. For example (2nd Trumpet = 2T, 2nd Bowl = 2B):
*2T: 1/3 of sea become blood and 1/3 of sea life die. 2B: All of sea become blood, all sea life die.
*3T: 1/3 of rivers and springs become wormwood. 3B: All rivers and springs become blood.
*4T: 1/3 of sun, moon and stars darkened; 1/3 of day did not shine. 4B: Sun scorches men with fire
*6T: 4 angels bound at Euphrates released & 200M soldiers used to kill 1/3 of mankind. 6B: Euphrates dried up so that way of kings from east can be prepared. 3 evil spirits from dragon, beast and false prophet gather AC’s armies to Armageddon.
I believe both the 7 trumpets and 7 bowls will take place during T2. It will be a fearful time on earth. But I also believe because many people will see the resurrection and rapture of the LDC in the midtrib, and because of the evangelizing by the 144,000 Messianic Jews of Rev 7 & 14, many will be saved in this period also.
Let’s pray that the gospel will go forth and save many until the very end, when Jesus returns to the Mt. of Olives!
