Devotion 1 of 1: Ps 69

V.21 says, “They also gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.” This was a prophecy that was fulfilled on the cross, according to John 19:28-30, “…Jesus…that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, ‘I thirst!’ …they filled a sponge with sour wine…and put it to His mouth…when Jesus…received the sour wine, He said, ‘It is finished!”
In a sense, David’s situation in this psalm was a picture of what Christ would go through on the cross. Like Jesus, David was being attacked by those who hated him though he had done nothing wrong (v.4). Also, David looked for comforters but found none (v.20), just as Christ was abandoned by all of His disciples.
But one section of this psalm is different from Jesus. In v.22-28, David asked God to punish his persecutors and blot them out of the book of the living! By contrast, Jesus prayed on the cross, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do” (Luke 23:34).
Let’s thank God we live in the age of grace, where, instead of receiving the judgment we deserve, we can receive forgiveness and eternal life that we don’t deserve!

2 TIM 4: Free sharing!
According to v.16, “At my first defense no one stood with me, but all forsook me. May it not be charged against them,” Paul also went through a trial similar to what David in Ps 69 and Jesus on the cross had gone through.
But because Paul had experienced God’s gracious forgiveness despite his persecuting Christians, he also extended forgiveness to those who had forsaken him! (Although he did want the Lord to repay Alexander for the harm he did! v.14)
May we also continually walk in forgiveness to those who sin against us and show grace to them, just as God has shown to us!
