Devotion 1 of 2: Deut 25

Amalek is mentioned in v.17-19. He symbolizes the flesh because he was the first enemy who attacked Israel after they were delivered from Egypt (Ex. 17:8-16). What strategy did he use? V.18 says that Amalek attacked the people at the rear, the stragglers, when they were tired (v.18)!
This is how the flesh attacks us today, too! He takes aim for us when we are tired and want to gripe and complain and don’t want to do the task before us! Also, Amalek attacked the stragglers, the ones who were in the back! When we’re slow to obey and slow to follow after Jesus, we become Satan’s targets! Let’s realize how the flesh attacks us and follow close to the Lord to overcome his attacks!

Devotion 2 of 2: Rom 9

The next 3 chapters are about the sovereignty of God vs man’s free will and also about God’s plan toward Israel. First of all, Rom 9 emphasizes the fact that God has the authority to decide matters (sovereignty) (v.15-16). This chapter also shows that God cut off Israel and chose the Gentiles to be his children (v.6-8).
Rom 10 will show man has a free will and can choose salvation, which is the opposite of God’s sovereignty. It will also continue to show that Israel rejected the gospel.
Finally, Rom 11 will emphasize God’s sovereignty once more. It will also show that Israel will be saved in the end. Let us pray God will help us to understand this complicated teaching of God’s sovereignty vs man’s free will!
