Devotion 1 of 2: Deut 11

In v.6, it says that Dathan and Abiram were descendants of Reuben, who was the firstborn son of Jacob. They joined with Korah and rebelled against Moses and Aaron, criticizing them for exalting themselves above the rest of Israel (Num 16:3).
What was probably motivating Dathan and Abiram was resentment that, although their ancestor Reuben was the firstborn, they were not the ones leading Israel. Their resentment led them to make disastrous choices that led to them being severely judged by God. The ground below them opened up, swallowing them and sending them to their death (Num 16:31-33)!
How we handle our past is so very important. If we harbor anger, bitterness and resentment, they can lead us to make tragic choices that may ruin our lives. Let’s take everything from our past to Jesus, and let him remove them! He will heal our hearts and give us a brighter future!

Devotion 2 of 2: Mark 11

The interesting story of Jesus cursing the fig tree is found in v.12-14 and v.20-24. Jesus was hungry, so he looked for fruit on the tree but found none so he declared no one would ever eat fruit from that tree again. And v.20 says the fig tree dried up from the roots, so Jesus’ declaration came to pass! But v.13 says that it was not the season for figs, so why did Jesus make that declaration?
I believe the fig tree symbolized Israel. Jesus wanted them to believe and accept him as the Messiah, but they rejected him. So they were cursed and cut off from God’s covenant and the gospel went to the Gentiles instead! But it was not the season for figs means that it wasn’t the time for Israel to believe in Jesus! Instead, Israel will accept Jesus as their Messiah at the end of this age, at Jesus’ 2nd coming (Zech 12-14)! So let’s pray for Israel to be saved so the fig tree can be resurrected!
