Devotion 1 of 2: Ps 29

7 times the expression, “The voice of the Lord” is repeated in this psalm. We want to hear the voice of the Lord in our personal lives as well as in our church services, so let’s learn here about God’s voice!
The voice of the Lord is likened to thunder in v.3 and is powerful and full of majesty according to v.4. This is certainly true for thunder! It breaks the cedars in v.5 and divides the flames of fire. I think this is a reference to lightning and thunder often causing forest fires. The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness, which happens in a thunderstorm, and strips the forests bare (v.9), which is what a forest fire does. And lastly, the voice of the Lord also gives life because it makes the deer give birth (v.9).
I think we can sum up the voice of the Lord this way: It is like thunder, powerful and majestic, causing fire, which burns away the chaff in us, and also empowers our evangelism, causing people to be born again! Let’s seek to hear the voice of the Lord in our personal and church life!

Devotion 2 of 2: Ps 30

What a wonderful psalm of encouragement this is! We should read this whenever we have trials because it will lift our spirit! As v.5b says, “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning!” Truly, our God turns our mourning into dancing and takes off our sackcloth to clothe us with gladness (v.11)!
