Devotion 1 of 2: Lev 24
This chapter deals with the lampstand oil, the table of showbread, and laws about blasphemy, retribution, etc. Concerning the laws about retribution, the standard in OT times was “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth (v.19-21)!”
The law has changed today in many countries to a law of compensation, in which the violator, instead of injuring himself with the same injury he gave to the victim, pays money to compensate for the damage he inflicted. This way the victim benefits from the wrong he suffered, whereas under retribution, he wouldn’t receive any such benefit!
In one recent case, a woman who was sexually assaulted, then harassed and defamed by the perpetuator was awarded a staggering amount of $83.3M to compensate for the damages she received! I think she appreciated the law of compensation much better than the law of retribution!

Devotion 2 of 2: Acts 24
(2/2)
In this chapter the high priest and elders from Jerusalem accuse Paul of creating dissention among the Jews, and Paul defends himself against their accusations. I want to point out 2 expressions that appear here that were beginning to be used to describe Christianity.
“Sect of the Nazarenes” (v.5). Jesus was called the Nazarene because he was from Nazareth. His followers were called a “sect” in a derogatory way.
“The Way” (v.14). Paul used this term based on Jesus’ words in John 14:6, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.”
Let’s not stumble if the world calls us a sect! Let’s just be faithful to follow Jesus!
