Devotion 1 of 2: Job 8

Job’s 3 friends try to help him through counseling, but they fail, so they are examples to us of how not to counsel. Job’s 2nd friend, Bildad, speaks in this chapter. He thinks that bad things happen to bad people as punishment for sin (v.3-4, 11-18). We all have this kind of thinking so Bildad is an example to caution us in how not to counsel. In counseling, we must not forget the lesson from Job 1 & 2 that God sometimes allows Satan to test the faithfulness of good people (1:8-22; 2:3-10). Let’s seek to counsel people with God’s heart and mind and not our own.

Devotion 2 of 2: Matt 8

(2/2)
Jesus shows his works and the effect it has on people in this chapter when done in the right way. In v.1-13, he heals two people who were despised in Jewish society, a leper and a Roman centurion’s servant. This shows his love is for everyone, especially the rejected! The effectiveness of his love healing is revealed in v.16 (They brought many sick to him and he healed them all!) and in v.18 (great multitudes gathered about him!). Let’s seek God so that we can do the works of Jesus as promised in John 14:12 and do it with true love so that many thousands will believe in Jesus through us!
