Devotion 1 of 2: Gen 36
(2/2)
Although Jacob and Esau seemed to have reconciled in Gen 33, their descendants became enemies, so there probably was resentment among Esau’s descendants that Jacob had stolen the firstborn blessings from them.
When their possessions became too great to live together, it was Esau who moved away (v.6-7), no doubt because Jacob had the firstborn right. And he ended up in Mt. Seir (v.8), a mountainous region which was not as good a place as Canaan.
Esau had a grandson named Amalek (v.12), who became the head of the Amalekites. When Israel was delivered from Egypt, they were the 1st people to attack Israel (Ex 17:8-16), probably because of that age-old resentment! So that’s why God opposed them very strongly, saying he would completely destroy the Amalekites from the earth! This story shows the importance of genuine reconciliation and love! We'll learn this in Joseph's story as well!

Devotion 2 of 2: Gen 35
1) Jacob told his family to put away all their foreign gods. After that, the terror of God was upon the cities around them as they journeyed! This shows us what can happen when we get rid of all of this world’s gods from our hearts!
2) Jacob means “one who supplants or pulls the feet,” and Israel means “one who prevails with God.” In the beginning, Jacob tried to change his life and destiny by supplanting Esau and deceiving Isaac. But after being deceived himself many, many times by Laban, he repented and sought to change his life and destiny the right way, by seeking and prevailing with God!
