Devotion 1 of 2: Dan 5
King Belshazzar showed pride and arrogance by using the gold and silver vessels taken from Solomon’s Temple to drink wine with at their feast (v.1-2). These vessels were used in temple ceremonies before God in the past. Suddenly a hand appeared and wrote, “Mene, Mene, Mene, Upharsin,” on the wall in the palace (v.5, 25). Daniel revealed the meaning of those words as: God has numbered your kingdom and finished it. You have been weighed in the balances and found wanting. Your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and Persians.” That very night the Medes and Persians attacked, Belshazzar was killed and the Babylonian Empire ended (v.30-31). We need to show respect and reverence toward God as well as toward holy and spiritual matters.
