Devotion 3 of 3: Philem 1

V.11 says Onesimus was once unprofitable to Philemon but now is profitable both to Philemon and Paul. This verse shows the wonderful transformation power of the gospel! Onesimus was Philemon’s slave, but he probably stole something valuable and ran away (v.18). But he was caught, while probably trying to steal again and was thrown into prison, where he encountered Paul, heard the gospel and was completely transformed (v.10)! So Paul is urging Philemon to forgive Onesimus and receive him as a brother (v.15-16) because he no longer will bring anger, hurt and loss to Philemon, but rather joy, encouragement and blessing! Truly the gospel can transform us!
