Devotion 1 of 2: John 7
There was great confusion among the Jews about who Jesus was (v.12-13: Good man, Deceiver; 15: How did he get such learning? 26: the Messiah; 31: the Messiah; 35-36: Where is he going so we cannot find him, to the Greeks? 40-43: the Prophet, the Messiah, not the Messiah; 52: not a prophet). One reason for this was because there was a lot of misinformation, preconceived notions, prejudices, ignorance, contradictions, etc., that affected their thinking so that they could not make a sound judgment.

Devotion 2 of 2: Judg 21
One lesson I learned from this chapter was that the standard of right and wrong in Bible times was sometimes very different from today. For example, Israel fought against Benjamin to punish them for their abuse of the Levite’s concubine (20:1-17) and killed all but 600 of their men (20:46-47). We can understand Israel’s actions to this point. But then they decide to help Benjamin to restore their tribe by looking for wives for them so they can marry and have children! And they do this by targeting Jabesh Gilead for not joining the fight against Benjamin and killing all their men, women and children, except for 400 virgins to give to the men of Benjamin! This would be a terrible act by today’s standards—killing thousands of people to provide 400 wives for Benjamin! So the lesson I learned is to not judge people in the Bible by today’s standards but by the standards of their day!
