Devotion 1 of 2: John 6

In v.25-66, the Jews are repeating what their ancestors did in the wilderness 1,500 years before! At that time, when God gave them manna from heaven, instead of believing, they murmured and complained, and finally died in the wilderness! And now, when Jesus is offering them the true bread of life from heaven (v.33-35), they end up grumbling and rejecting God’s will again (v.41, 52, 60-61, 66)! God emphasized once more to me how disastrous my grumbling, getting irritated, speaking negatively, etc. are! They will stop me from entering the Promised Land! Lord, help me to always confess your goodness in every situation in my life and not to give in to grumbling!

Devotion 2 of 2: Judg 20

I think the reason why God allowed Israel to be defeated twice before finally achieving victory was to show how much God didn’t want to destroy one of Israel’s tribes. Israel was like God’s children, and even though he knew in the end he would have to punish Benjamin, he couldn’t do it right away. But after 2 failures, God finally released judgment upon Benjamin and nearly wiped out this tribe. Fortunately, 600 men were spared (v.47), so they were able to rebuild again in chapter 21!
