Devotion 1 of 2: Job 36

What Elihu is saying in this chapter is orthodox Bible teaching—that God exalts the righteous (v.7), so they live in prosperity (v.11), but people suffer affliction because of sin (v.8-9) and will perish if they disobey (v.12). This is similar to what Job’s 3 friends said.

But Job’s experience was different! He didn’t sin, yet he suffered terribly! Why? I believe to understand, we need to realize that what Elihu described is what normally happens, but life is complicated, and there are exceptions to the rule, and that was what Job was experiencing! He was suffering, not because he sinned, but because Satan was attacking him to make him reject and curse God. Job didn’t curse God, which was his victory, but he did complain, which was his failure!

So the lesson for counselors is that people sometimes suffer, not because of sin but for other reasons, so we shouldn’t judge them too quickly. And the lesson for someone going through suffering is that God will never do wrong, and so we should never complain about God! Rather, we should fight against our true enemy, Satan!
