Devotion 1 of 2: James 3
1) In Judges 11:29-39, Jephthah made a vow that if God gave Israel victory over the Ammonites, he would offer up as a burnt offering whoever came first out of his house to greet him when he returned home. To his dismay, his daughter was the first to greet him, so because of his careless vow, he had to sacrifice her. Personally, I don’t think he offered her as a sacrifice but rather didn’t give her away in marriage, so that she died as a virgin. The lesson is that we should be careful of what we say!
2) When Israel attacked Jericho, they circled the city once a day for 6 days, then 7 times on the 7th day. Joshua ordered them to not say a word until the very end, when he would order them to shout. I believe he did this so that no one would complain or speak negatively that this strategy wouldn’t work, etc. Israel obeyed this order, and when they all shouted together at Joshua’s command, the walls of Jericho fell, and Israel had a great victory! When we obey God with in our speaking, he will work for us!

Devotion 2 of 2: Lam 2
This book is mourning the destruction of Jerusalem by Babylon in 586 BC. Nebuchadnezzar besieged the city and cut off all food from entering, so many people starved to death. In the end, they ate all the animals, even dogs and rats, and finally they ate their own children! V.20 alludes to this tragedy: “Should the women eat their offspring, the children they have cuddled?”! We should learn from this disaster that when we turn our backs on God, as Judah did, we will pay the consequences!
