Devotion 1 of 2: James 4
V. 1 says, “Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure (or gain, or land, etc.) that war in your members?” There is a terrible war going on in Israel now between Hamas and Israel. Peace is very difficult because Hamas believes Israel has stolen their land, so they want to destroy Israel and get their land back. Meanwhile, Israel believes the land really belongs to them because they lived there from 1400 BC until 70 AD, when Rome kicked them out. I think the only solution is for the two sides to agree to divide the land and live in peace or for them to have an all-out war and one side destroy the other to assume complete control. Of course, I favor the first solution. But it will never happen unless both sides give up much of their desires so they can meet in the middle and reach an agreement.

Devotion 2 of 2: Lam 3
In v.1-20, Jeremiah talks about all the sufferings God has put him through. But in v.21-66, he changes his viewpoint and talks about hope (v.21), the Lord’s mercies (v.22), and great is his faithfulness (v.23), etc.! This is an illustration of how our life can change from despair to victory by what we focus on. If we focus on the negatives in our life, we will be like Jeremiah in v.1-21, desolate (v.11) and bitter (v.15). But if we look on the Lord’s compassion (v.23) and goodness (v.25), we will have hope (v.21) and victory (v.26)! Help me, Lord, to be the Jeremiah of v.21-66 and not the Jeremiah of v.1-20!
