Devotion 1 of 2: Ps 50
The phrase, “From the rising of the sun to its going down…” (v.1b) is seen many times in the Bible. This phrase was one reason the Medieval Church believed the earth was the center of the universe. They interpreted this Scripture literally, claiming it meant that the sun moves around the earth!
Actually, this belief was held by Greek philosophers such as Aristotle and also most of civilization until Copernicus (1540) and Galileo (1632) proved that the earth and planets revolved around the sun and not vice-versa!
Devotion 2 of 2: Gal 2
The gospel of Paul was radically different from Judaism, so the early Christians, who were mostly Jews, brought up in Judaism, had a difficult time accepting it. This developed into the conflict between the Judaistic believers, led by James (v.11), and the grace believers, led by Paul, of the early church.
Two differences in teaching were the need of circumcision and of separation from Gentiles. Paul taught those were not necessary. Peter was caught in the middle when he first ate with Gentiles but when James’ men visited, he withdrew from them (v.11-16). Let’s understand Paul’s gospel of grace!
