Devotion 1 of 2: Gen 35
In v.2-4, Jacob got rid of all the foreign gods in his household. The idols of Laban that Rachel had stolen were no doubt thrown away and buried here, accomplishing her mission of cleansing her father’s household of idols!
In v.9-15, Jacob goes once more to Bethel, a type of the church. God tells him that his name is no longer Jacob but Israel. In the Bible, a person’s name often identifies his character. Jacob’s name changing symbolizes his character changing. The church should be a place where our character is changed to be more like Jesus.

Devotion 2 of 2: Gen 36
This chapter describes the descendants of Esau. Esau represents the flesh because he didn’t understand the spiritual value of his firstborn birthright and despised it by selling it for only a single meal to feed his flesh.
There are many descendants listed in this chapter who come from Esau! I counted about 42 of them! I see this as a picture of how sin and the flesh can multiply and spread so rapidly, both in our own lives as well as in society. Let’s praise God that the church Jesus is building will overcome the gates of hell (Matt 16:18)!

この章はエサウの子孫について述べています。エサウは肉の象徴です。なぜなら、彼は長子の権利の霊的な価値を理解せず、それを軽蔑し、たった一度の食事のために肉を満たすために売り飛ばしたからです。
この章にはエサウの子孫がたくさん登場します！私は42人ほど数えました！これは、罪と肉が私たち自身の生活だけでなく社会においても、いかに急速に増殖し、広がっていくかを示す例えだと私は考えています。イエスが建てている教会がハデスの門に打ち勝つことを神に感謝しましょう（マタイ16:18）。
