Devotion 1 of 2: Gen 13

Jesus said the days of Lot (and Abram) were a type of the last days (Luke 17:28-30). And their relationship reflects our church’s key verse for this year, John 17:22, “…that they may be one just as We are one…”
Abram wanted unity with Lot. He didn’t want strife between his and Lot’s herdsmen, so he allowed Lot to choose the grazing land for his herds first (v.8-9). So, Lot chose the best land and Abram accepted the other land (v.10-12). This shows how unity is possible—by doing Rom 12:10 (NIV), “Honor one another above yourselves!”

Devotion 2 of 2: Gen 14

In this chapter, “tithe” is mentioned in the Bible for the 1st time! When Abram’s nephew Lot and his family and goods were taken by 4 kings (v.8-12), Abram went after them and rescued Lot and all his goods (v.14-16). Upon his return, Abram met Melchizedek king of Salem along the way and gave him a tithe of all (v.18-20).
Through Melchizedek, Abram realized that God enabled him to rescue Lot and gain goods, not his own strength and efforts; therefore, everything belonged to God! This is why he gave the tithe, and it’s the same for us today!
