Devotion 1 of 2: Jer 34

In v.8-22, King Zedekiah made a covenant with the Jewish people to set their Hebrew slaves free. This was because Babylon had besieged Jerusalem and looked like they would conquer it. If so, the people wouldn’t need slaves anymore. Also this would set their countrymen free so they could try their best to survive the coming battle.
But the Babylonians withdrew, so the Jews changed their minds and made the slaves return! Seeing that, God declared that because the Jews broke their covenant, they would die by the Babylonians (v.22)!
If the Jews had kept their covenant, God would’ve protected Judah from Babylon’s invasion! The Egyptians attacked from the south, so Nebuchadnezzar temporarily withdrew from his siege to go fight Egypt. If he had been defeated, Jerusalem would’ve been saved! But Nebuchadnezzar won, so he returned and destroyed Jerusalem.
Let’s be a people who keep our word. God will see it and honor our life.

Devotion 2 of 2: Rom 6

This chapter contains the best teaching of baptism in the Bible. Going into the water in baptism symbolizes the believer dying to his old life and being buried with Jesus. Coming up out of the water symbolizes her walking a new life with Christ (v.3-4)!
There are several parables or types in the Bible that picture water baptism. Israel crossing the Red Sea to escape from Egypt is one parable. We see Pharaoh’s army was drowned in the sea, cutting off Egypt’s stranglehold on the Jews. This symbolizes that through salvation, we are no longer slaves to sin and can walk a life of freedom!
Another parable is the flood of Noah. This happened in order to cleanse the earth of the sins of mankind and give both man and the earth a fresh start. This is what water baptism symbolizes—cleansing of the past and a fresh start! Let’s thank God for water baptism and aim to fulfill what it symbolizes in our everyday walk.
