Devotion 1 of 2: 1 Sam 25

WED, 1/15 (1/4)
1 SAM 25: Free sharing!
This chapter tells of the death of Samuel in v.1 and how David and Abigail married in v.2-44.
Abigail was intelligent and beautiful but was married to Nabal, who was harsh and evil in his doings (v.3). He was also a very rich man with 3K sheep and 1K goats (v.2). David sends some men to ask Nabal to give him and his men whatever he would like to give (v.8). The reason David asks for something is because his men protected Nabal’s sheep from wild animals and raids by the Philistines (v.14-17).
But Nabal rejects David’s request and insults him, too (v.10-11). Infuriated, David gets his men ready to attack Nabal and kill all his men (v.12-13). When Abigail hears this, she immediately prepares a large gift of foods and takes it to David (v.18). With great wisdom, she persuades David to not attack Nabal but to accept the gift as a token of Abigail’s repentance for what her husband did, which David does (v.23-35).
When Abigail returns, Nabal is getting drunk at his feast, celebrating the shearing of his sheep (v.36). He falls asleep drunk, and the next morning Abigail tells him what she did, and 10 days later, Nabal dies (v.37-38). When David hears this, he proposes to Abigail and they marry (v.39-42).
Appl: The graciousness and wisdom of Abigail shines in this story. She takes a tragic situation that could have led to a massacre of her household and turns it into only one man dying! That man is her husband, Nabal, who is responsible for the near disaster. Thus, she saves her entire household and business.
Then she marries David, who would become the greatest king in Israel’s history. I’m sure Nabal’s business was inherited by his sons or other family members, who could run it better than Nabal, who was a foolish man. So, Abigail could leave and marry David without any worries.
Let’s learn to be like Abigail in how we deal with people and problems, by being humble, taking responsibility, speaking softly and honoring others. For the women in church, let’s make Abigail a goal to aim for! And for men, let’s ask God to take the Nabal out of us and make us more like David!

Devotion 2 of 2: 1 Sam 26

This chapter describes the 2nd time David spared Saul’s life. Although David had spared him once before, Saul forgets his remorse in seeking David’s life and starts to hunt for him again. This time Saul sleeps in his camp, and David sneaks in and takes Saul’s spear and water jug close to his head (v.12). In the morning, David wakes Saul up and shows him his spear and water jug, and once more, Saul shows remorse for trying to kill David (v.21-25).
Appl: Because this story is repeated twice, it means it has a very important message for us. David’s attitude toward Saul is the main lesson. God is teaching us about the kind of attitude the LDC should have toward the denominational church that doesn’t recognize it and even tries to shut it down and maybe accuses it of unbiblical teaching.
We shouldn’t lift our voices in judgment against that church. We should honor them for the contributions they have made to Christianity and pray that they will see and understand God’s endtime plan for the restoration of the church. We should warn them that we will not be raptured before AC or the tribulation. We don’t want to see their members fall away in compromise to AC because of his threats and persecutions.
But let’s not fight or argue with them. Let’s love and pray for them because they are our family in Christ.
