Devotion 1 of 2: 1 Sam 14

Saul commits more failures in this chapter. Let’s look at just 3 points and their applications to revivals.
1) Jonathan defeats the Philistines apart from Saul’s army (v.1-14).
Appl: During revival times, believers will receive great blessing outside of the denomination’s boundaries.
2) Saul asked for the Ark to inquire of the Lord, but then ignored the Ark and went to battle (v.18-19).
Appl: This was a rude way of inquiring of God. This shows organizations’ poor understanding of how to find God’s will.
3) During the battle, Saul ordered his people not to eat. So, no one ate despite finding honey. But Jonathan didn’t hear the command, so he ate honey and his face brightened. When Jonathan heard about Saul’s order, he disagreed, saying if they had eaten, they could’ve had a greater victory (v.24-30).
Appl: Sometimes man-centered organizations make the wrong decision that hurts the believers. During a revival, those who don’t follow the decision receive great blessing. The denominations who accept the revival receive new fervor and growth. This is why revival spreads.
We should not reject a new movement right away, but carefully examine the new teaching without prejudiced opinions. And if we find it is an accurate interpretation of God’s Word, we should receive the new revival!

Devotion 2 of 2: 1 Sam 13

This chapter examines Saul’s first failure as king. Before going to war against the Philistines, Saul waited for Samuel to come to offer a burnt offering before the battle. But Samuel didn’t arrive by the appointed time, and the people began to scatter, so Saul presented the burnt offering himself (v.5-9). Just then, Samuel arrived and rebuked Saul, prophesying that because he didn’t keep God’s command, his kingdom wouldn’t continue (v.10-14)!
Application: In our study, Saul represents man-made organizations and Samuel, revival, and being led by the Holy Spirit. Let’s look at these points:
1) Saul’s intentions for offering the burnt offering were pure. He wanted to keep his army from scattering before the battle. Motivation for starting organizations usually is pure: to prevent souls saved in a revival from scattering in order to preserve them. Forming denominations is needful and wonderful in many ways because of the benefits they provide.
2) But Samuel said Saul had disobeyed God’s command by offering a sacrifice, which God commanded priests to do, not kings. This infers man-made organizations can disobey God by being led, not by the Holy Spirit, but by committee or board meetings!
3) As a result, Saul’s kingdom would not continue. This is warning us that man-centered denominations will not produce God’s glory during the LDR, but may very well compromise and fall away before AC’s persecutions.
Let’s pray our church will be a Christ-following revival center, not a man-centered organization!
