Devotion 1 of 2: 1 Sam 7

*The books of 1 & 2 Samuel show a prophetic picture through Israel’s history of how the church would be restored to the glorious church of the endtime. For this reason, it’s of utmost importance for today’s believers to understand the spiritual meaning of these 2 books.
Application: In church restoration history, Eli is a type of the church of the Middle Ages before the Reformation. Samuel is a type of the many revivals that have taken place since 1517 to restore the church one step at a time. Saul is a type of the denominations that were formed after each revival that did not maintain their revival fervor but slowly evolved into man-centered organizations. And David is a type of the last day church (LDC) that will be used by God to spark a world-wide revival.
Grasping the spiritual meaning of these 2 books will give a good understanding of how God has been working throughout church history to fulfill His plan of restoring the church to the LDC.
*This 7th chapter describes the partial restoration of the Ark of the Covenant to Israel for 20 long years, not to the tabernacle at Shiloh, where it belonged, but to the house of Abinadab in Kirjath Jearim (v.1-2)! This was during the Age of Samuel as Israel’s spiritual leader.
Application: Each revival (Reformation, Baptist, Methodist, Holiness, World missions, Evangelical, Pentecostal, etc.) restored an important truth(s) that had been lost, but was only a partial restoration of the church, not the full restoration, which will come in the endtime.
*When the Philistines threatened to attack Israel, Samuel offered a burnt offering, and God responded by driving back the Philistines (v.7-12).
Application: Each revival gave the church victory over the crisis the church was facing at that time. It filled a need, and so each revival was important and made an invaluable contribution to rebuilding the church.
Let’s recognize the contribution that each denomination made and thank God for the heritage that each revival and church group left for future believers.

Devotion 2 of 2: 1 Sam 8

In this chapter we see that Samuel’s sons did not follow his way, which resulted in the people demanding a king to rule them like all the nations (v.1-5). God allowed it, but told Samuel to warn the people of the negatives of being ruled by a king (v.9-18).
Application: Because of failures in leadership after a revival, the people choose to organize and form a denomination. This is good in many ways, but there are also deficiencies, like the possibility of losing being led by the Holy Spirit.
Let’s be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of organizations and be thankful for each one.
