Devotion 1 of 2: Ps 106
This psalm reviews the many failures of Israel during their journey from Egypt to the Promised Land (PL) and some of their failures in Canaan, too. Let’s divide the verses into Introduction, Egypt, the wilderness and the PL and point out one lesson in each.
Introduction: v.1-5. V.2 asks, “Who can utter the mighty acts of the Lord?” And supplies the answer in v.3: “He who does righteousness at all times!” Let’s seek God to do righteousness so we can declare His mighty acts!
Egypt: v.6-12. V.7 says that Israel rebelled by the Red Sea. This refers to the cries of fear they launched against Moses when they saw Pharaoh’s army coming after them (Ex 14:10-12). By contrast, Moses listened to God’s voice, lifted his rod and opened up the Red Sea so Israel could walk across it on dry land (Ex 14:15-16, 21-22). Let’s not be like Israel and complain when we run into a problem. Instead, let’s be like Moses, listen to God and solve the problem!
Wilderness: v.13-33. V.13 says, “They soon forgot His works…” What a tragedy! Soon after their historic victory over Pharaoh at the Red Sea, they completely forgot God’s mighty, miraculous works and began complaining for lack of water! Let’s overcome negative talking by never forgetting God's miracles, and always being grateful to Him!
PL: v.34-48. V.35 says, “They mingled with the Gentiles and learned their works.” The reason why God commanded the Jews not to associate with Gentiles was to protect them from their evil influences. What should we do when invited to drink after work? What about going to nightclubs or bars? Let’s ask God to give us the wisdom we need to not compromise our standards, yet maintain a good relationship with our co-workers.

Devotion 2 of 2: Rev 4
The book of Revelation is full of prophecies and also full of pictures and allegories. This chapter describes God’s throne in heaven and uses many allegories. God is on His throne in v.2, but He is described as appearing like a jasper and a sardius stone in v.3! 24 elders on thrones around God’s throne are not unusual (v.4), but the 7 Spirits of God are said to look like 7 lamps of fire burning before God’s throne (v.5)!
But next comes a mega-allegorical expression of 4 living creatures around the throne of God (v.6-8). First, they were full of eyes in front and back! Then the 1st creature looks like a lion, the 2nd like a calf, the 3rd had a man’s face, and the 4th was like a flying eagle! Finally, they all had 6 wings, were full of eyes around and within and they were worshiping God!
When studying Revelation, I’m reminded of what Jesus explained in Matt 13:10-17 about why He spoke in parables. It was so that the unbelieving would not understand the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but His disciples would because it was given to them to know those mysteries. Let’s be disciples of Jesus! And let’s search with humble hearts to hear His interpretations about the allegories of His kingdom in the book of Revelation.
