Devotion 1 of 2: Deut 21
V.15-17 say that if a man had 2 wives, one loved and the other unloved, and they both bore sons, he had to give the double portion to the actual firstborn son, even if he was born to the unloved wife. This Scripture makes clear the firstborn blessing includes the double portion of the father’s inheritance or land.
I experienced a “partial double portion” inheritance from my parents. They favored boys, so they divided their inheritance to 1/4 each to my younger brother and me and 1/8 each to my 4 sisters. That inheritance meant a lot.

15-17節には、夫に妻が二人いて、一方は愛され、もう一方は愛されていなかった場合、二人とも息子を産んだなら、長男がたとえ愛されていなかった妻から生まれたとしても、二倍の相続分を与えなければならないと書かれている。この御言葉は、長子の祝福には父親の相続財産や土地の二倍分が含まれることを明確に示している。
実は、私は親から「部分的な二倍の相続分」を受け取った。親は男の子をひいきしていたので、相続財産を弟と私にそれぞれ4分の1ずつ、4人の姉妹にそれぞれ8分の1ずつ分けてくれた。その相続財産は私にとって意味深いものだった。
Devotion 2 of 2: Deut 22
V.22-30 deal with several different kinds of sexual misconduct, each carrying different consequences. In the case of a man and a married woman, the penalty is death for both (v.22). If it’s a man and a betrothed woman, in the city, both are stoned to death (v.23-24); in the countryside, he is stoned and she is unpunished (v.25-27).
If it’s a man and a woman not betrothed, they must marry but can never divorce (v.28-29). Finally, a man should never have physical relationship with his father’s wife (v.30). The Jews were strict with sexual misconduct. Let’s desire purity, too, but let’s not be legalistic!

22-30節では、いくつかの種類の性的な罪が取り上げられていて、それぞれの場合に応じた刑罰が科せられる。既婚の女性と関係を持った男性の場合は、二人とも死刑になる（22節）。婚約中の女性との場合は、町の中であれば二人とも石打ちの刑になるが（23-24節）、野原であれば、男性だけが石打ちの刑となり、女性には罪は問われない（25-27節）。
未婚の女性との場合は、男性は彼女と結婚し、生涯離婚してはならない（28-29節）。最後に、息子は父の妻と性的関係を持ってはならない（30節）。ユダヤ人は性的な罪に対してとても厳しかった。私たちも純潔を求めよう。でも、律法主義になってはならない。
