Devotion 1 of 2: Gen 47
In this chapter Jacob and his sons are given the best land to live in Egypt (v.6). Then during the 7 years of famine, Joseph manages the selling of Pharaoh’s grain stored during the 7 years of abundance.
Joseph exercises total rule, and sells Pharaoh’s grain for all the people’s money, livestock, and even their lives and land (v.13-20)! In the end, the people worked the land, giving 1/5 of the crops to Pharoah and keeping 4/5 to live on (v.23-24). This kind of total rule was common in the past and can be seen in some countries even today.

この章では、ヤコブとその息子たちはエジプトで暮らすのに最良の土地を与えられます（6節）。その後、7年間の飢饉の間、ヨセフは7年間の豊作の間に蓄えられたパロの穀物を売却します。
ヨセフは徹底的な統治を行い、民の金銭、家畜、さらには命と土地と引き換えにパロの穀物を売り渡します（13-20節）。最終的に、民は土地を耕作し、収穫の5分の1をパロに納め、残りの4分の5を生活費として確保しました（23-24節）。このような徹底的な統治は過去には一般的であり、今日でも一部の国で見られます。

Devotion 2 of 2: Gen 48
This chapter describes Jacob blessing Joseph’s twin sons, the 1st Manasseh (M) and the 2nd Ephraim (E). Instead of putting his right hand on M, Jacob crossed his arms and put it on E and gave him the firstborn blessing (v.14)! This small gesture carried a powerful truth—the cross was the way for the younger to the firstborn blessing!
This truth applies to many cases: Isaac vs Ishmael, Jacob vs Esau, Joseph vs Reuben, David vs Eliab, the church vs Israel, Protestant vs Catholic, LDC vs established church, etc. Let’s learn the way of the cross!
