Devotion 1 of 2: Lam 3
Jeremiah wrote this book when he lamented over the destruction and captivity of the Jews by Babylon from 586 BC. The first 20 verses of this chapter are full of sorrow and negative confessions because of the tragedy that happened to the Jews. An example is v.5, “He has besieged me and surrounded me with bitterness and woe.”
But Jeremiah’s confession changes from v.21 because he emphasizes the good things God provided in the midst of tragedy. The great hymn, “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” was inspired from v.23: “They (God’s mercies) are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”
Out of the same circumstances we can confess tragedy or God’s mercy! Let’s choose the latter!
Devotion 2 of 2: James 4
V.9 says, “Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” This verse fits in well to what I wrote about Lamentations 3 above.
So, when tragedy strikes us, like the Babylonian Captivity did to the Jews, we should mourn and weep. This is what Jeremiah did in Lam 3:1-20. But we should not remain in mourning! We should allow the Lord to lift us up, which Jeremiah did in Lam 3:21-66! After humbling ourselves, let’s confess God’s mercy and goodness!
