Devotion 1 of 2: Prov 31

Let’s look at v.4-5, “It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, nor for princes intoxicating drink; lest they drink and forget the law, and pervert the justice of all the afflicted.”
The Bible warns us about the bad effects of alcohol, how it makes us forget things and twists our judgment. Many people turn to alcohol when they feel hurt and want to overcome it by forgetting it. But when the drink wears off, the pain comes back, and they have to drink some more. So, alcohol is not a permanent solution.
Rather, let’s learn to take our pains to Jesus. Let’s confess that Jesus took all our pains upon Himself and provided healing for us. Let’s realize He was there when we were hurt, and He felt everything we went through. And now He’s telling us to give Him the pain and somehow learn to let go and even forgive the other person. When we do this, we’ll find healing and be set free from the pain!

Devotion 2 of 2: 3 John 1

This book was addressed to a man named Gaius (v.1) and had the opposite message of 2 John, which warned not to receive evil people into the church. In 3 John, a man named Diotrephes was not receiving John into the church! And not only that but he was also putting those who wanted to receive John out of the church (v.10)!
How did John deal with this problem? He said he would deal with Diotrephes directly when he went there (v.10). John no doubt fulfilled this promise. Then, by contrast, he praised Demetrius as one who had a good testimony (v.12). In contrasting these two men, John told Gaius to imitate the good, not the evil (v.11).
Let’s also have discernment like John and receive good people while not allowing bad people to influence the church.
