Devotion 1 of 2: Ps 134
At the Tabernacle of David (DT), priests were praying and/or worshiping 24 hours a day! This is how 1 Chron 16 (KJV) describes the worship at DT: “4 And he (David) appointed certain of the Levites to minister before the ark of the Lord, to record, and to thank and praise the Lord God of Israel: 5 Asaph the chief…Jeiel with psalteries and with harps; but Asaph made a sound with cymbals; 6 …the priests with trumpets continually before the ark of the covenant of God. 37 So he left there before the ark of the covenant of the Lord Asaph and his brethren, to minister before the ark continually, as every day's work required.”
The word “continually” (v.6, 37) is translated “regularly” in many modern Bible translations. The reason is that continually would mean 24-hours-a-day, which today’s Christians find hard to accept. But the Hebrew word is “tamid,” which is translated “at all times,” “always,” “continuously,” and “perpetually” most of the time. So, it does seem that DT did have a 24-hour continuous prayer and worship ministry going on.
David organized the priests into shifts so that some were praying or praising throughout the night. I believe it was to these priests that David directed this psalm, thanking them for their sacrifice to keep DT going, as expressed in v.1, “Behold, bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord, who by night stand in the house of the Lord!”
If we feel discouraged as we pray at night, let’s remember this psalm because God is watching us as we pray!
Devotion 2 of 2: Mark 15
This chapter describes the crucifixion of Jesus. In v.34, after Jesus cried out, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” (My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?), v.35 says, ‘Some of those who stood by, when they heard that, said, “Look, He is calling for Elijah!”’
From the above Scripture, we realize many Jews were familiar with Malachi’s prophecy about Elijah coming before the Messiah. But their knowledge was limited and also inaccurate. For example, they didn’t realize that John the Baptist had already fulfilled Malachi’s prophecy by coming in the spirit and power of Elijah (Luke 1:17; Matt 17:10-13).
And because they didn’t realize this, they thought that Jesus was calling for Elijah to come and help him! So, we can say that because they didn’t understand the Elijah prophecy correctly, they misunderstood what Jesus was saying on the cross, and they also completely missed God’s plan of salvation through Jesus on the cross!
In the endtime, it will be similar. The Malachi prophecy, the Mt. of Transfiguration vision and the 2 witnesses of Rev 11 all show God’s endtime plan, with Elijah playing a vital role. But if we do not understand how Elijah will come and what role he will play in the endtime, we may completely miss God’s endtime plan of giving His people the spirit and the power of Elijah to transform them into the Elijah Church and bring forth the greatest revival in history!
Let’s seek to understand accurately the Elijah prophecy and how it will be fulfilled in the endtime!
